SECURITY
RESEARCH
SHOULD BE A
PUBLIC GOOD.
We publish our tools, share our methods, and advance the field with every engagement. The best way to protect our clients is to raise the security bar for everyone.

Founding Story

Trail of Bits launched in 2012 because the security industry had a knowledge-hoarding problem. Firms competed on secrecy while the same vulnerabilities showed up everywhere. We took the opposite approach: solve the problem once, build a tool, release it publicly. Thirteen years later, we maintain 100+ open-source projects used by security teams worldwide.

Core Principles

"Publish everything" means exactly that. Our blog posts become industry reference material. Our internal tools become community standards. When we discover a new attack pattern, we don't just report it. We build automated detection and put it in everyone's hands. This isn't a marketing strategy. It's how we think security should work.

What Makes Us Different

Typical consultancies write reports. We eliminate problems at scale. When you hire Trail of Bits, you're not buying hours of someone's time; you're buying access to research that shapes where the industry goes next. Multi-year DARPA programs. AI Cyber Challenge finalists. Vulnerabilities disclosed in systems that dedicated security teams couldn't protect. Our clients get the benefit of work that pushes the entire field forward.

Top talent

As a cybersecurity research and consulting firm, we serve clients in the defense, tech, finance, and blockchain industries. Our teams help with their most difficult security challenges by designing and building new technology, researching new techniques to advance the state of practice, and reviewing the security of the latest available technology products before they hit the market.
“Our team is our most important area of investment. We take great pride in only accepting work we find interesting, engaging, and challenging.”
DAN GUIDO, CO-FOUNDER & CEO
