When can I expect to hear back once I submit my application?

We typically review applications within 5-7 business days. If your background and experience align with our requirements, a member of our talent acquisition team will reach out to schedule a preliminary phone screen.

What is the interview process for this role?

Our interview process for full-time roles typically consists of several stages:

  • Preliminary screen with our Senior Technical Recruiter (30 minutes)
  • Technical screening with an engineer or hiring manager (60 minutes)
  • Technical assessment or take-home project (if applicable, varies by role). The take-home project will be role-specific and typically involves a business case or scenario relevant to your potential responsibilities. For example:
    • Recruiters might receive a set of open roles and be asked to outline their sourcing strategy.
    • Marketing managers might be asked to develop a launch plan for a new tool or case study for a client.
  • Final panel interview with team members (90 minutes - 2 hours)

What should I expect in the technical assessment?

The technical assessment typically takes the form of a code challenge where you'll be asked to identify and analyze security vulnerabilities within a specific codebase. This will assess your ability to:

  • Identify security issues and potential vulnerabilities
  • Explain the impact and exploitation potential of each finding
  • Document your analysis methodology

You'll have a reasonable timeframe to complete the assessment, usually several days to a week. This format allows us to evaluate both your technical expertise and your ability to communicate findings effectively.

Do you offer remote work options?

Yes! While our corporate office is in New York City, many of our positions offer flexible remote work arrangements and Trail of Bits has team members across multiple time zones. Specific requirements will be discussed during the interview process.

What are the typical working hours?

We maintain flexible working hours to accommodate our distributed team, but expect team members to have sufficient overlap with their colleagues for collaboration. Core working hours are typically discussed during the interview process and vary by team and project requirements.

What kind of engineering projects would I work on?

Our teams work on a diverse range of projects, including:

  • Development of novel security analysis tools and research
  • Security assessments of complex software systems and applications
  • Analysis of cryptographic protocols and zero-knowledge proof systems
  • Security evaluations of AI/ML models and systems
  • Smart contract audits and blockchain protocol security reviews
